Enel Costa Rica

San José, Costa Rica

Costa Rica's first WELL Platinum certified workplace — a 300 m² headquarters in San José with hexagonal meeting pods, a flexible café hub, and interiors derived from the geometry and light quality of tropical forest.

Enel Costa Rica's head office in San José sets a new benchmark for workplace design in Central America — the first project in Costa Rica to achieve WELL Platinum certification, the highest standard for health and wellness in the built environment. The brief called for a workspace that embodied Enel's philosophy of open power: a 300 m² environment where collaboration is not just encouraged but built into every surface, every threshold, and every seat. The design takes its cues from Costa Rica's natural landscape — the hexagonal geometry of tree trunks, the texture of living canopy, the quality of filtered tropical light — and translates these into a contemporary workplace that feels genuinely rooted in its environment.

The centrepiece is a flexible café and hub space surrounded by hexagonal meeting pods, each one referencing the cross-section of a tropical tree trunk and providing intimate enclosure within the larger open floor. A full-height living green wall anchors the interior, with indoor planting threaded throughout the space to maintain connection to the natural world. Motorised shades track the arc of the sun across the day, managing glare and heat gain while preserving views and daylight. The scope extended beyond architecture and interiors to include bespoke furniture design, sit-stand desks throughout, and a comprehensive environmental graphics programme that weaves Enel's identity and Costa Rica's landscape into the fabric of the office. Dedicated spaces for gym use, a quiet relaxation room, and a lactation room reflect a genuine commitment to the full spectrum of employee wellbeing — not as add-ons, but as considered elements of the overall design. Enel, the largest energy provider in South America, operates two hydroelectric projects in Costa Rica. This office is an expression of that investment — a space designed to attract, retain, and energise the team that runs them.
